How to Make a Photo Grid (2, 4, 6 or 9 Photos)
How to put photos into a neat grid on iPhone or online: which grid to use, the best sizes for social media and print, and tips for a clean result.
A photo grid puts several photos into equal boxes, such as 2×2, 2×3 or 3×3. It's the simplest kind of collage and the cleanest way to show a set of photos together.
Here's how to make one in a minute, free, and how to choose the right grid.
Make a photo grid online
- Open our free collage maker.
- Choose a grid layout: 2 side by side, 2×2 (4 photos), 3×2 (6 photos) or 3×3 (9 photos).
- Add your photos. They fill the grid in order.
- Drag photos inside their boxes to adjust the crop, and click a box to swap a photo.
- Set spacing to zero for a seamless grid, or add spacing and rounded corners for a softer look.
- Download the JPG.
Make a photo grid on iPhone
In FotoCollage, tap +, choose a grid layout, add photos from your library and adjust borders and canvas size. You can also add a background, text or stickers, or apply one filter to every photo so the grid looks consistent.
Which grid should I use?
- 2×1: comparisons such as before and after.
- 2×2: the classic. Good for any four photos of an event.
- 3×2: trips and weekends, landscape or portrait.
- 3×3: recaps and "top 9" posts. Use photos with one clear subject, because each cell is small.
Grid sizes
| Use | Canvas |
|---|---|
| Instagram post | 1080 × 1350 (4:5) or 1080 × 1080 (1:1) |
| Story / WhatsApp status | 1080 × 1920 (9:16) |
| 4×6 print | 1200 × 1800 px at 300 dpi |
| 8×10 print | 2400 × 3000 px at 300 dpi |
Tips for a clean grid
- Photos with similar light and colour make the grid look like one piece.
- Alternate close-ups and wide shots so the grid doesn't feel repetitive.
- Zero spacing feels bold and modern. Thin white spacing feels like a gallery.
- Check faces at the edges of each cell, because a grid crops every photo to fit its box.
