How to Make a Collage on iPhone (Step by Step)
The easiest ways to make a photo collage on iPhone: with a collage app, with a free online maker, and with the built-in Shortcuts app. Plus tips for layouts that look good.
Your iPhone is full of great photos, but they look even better together. A collage tells the whole story of a trip, a birthday or a wedding in one image, and it's the easiest way to share many photos in a single post.
The Photos app on iPhone is great for editing and cropping, but it doesn't arrange several photos into a designed layout. Here are three ways to do it, from quickest to most creative.
Method 1: Use a collage app (best results)
A dedicated collage app gives you layouts, backgrounds, text and stickers in one place. Here's how it works in FotoCollage: Collage maker:
- Download FotoCollage from the App Store and open it.
- Tap the + button to start a new project, or pick a ready-made template from the Trending, Travel or Wedding sections.
- Choose a layout. Pick how many photos you want and the grid shape: side by side, stacked, a big hero photo with smaller ones, or a classic 3×3 grid.
- Add your photos straight from your photo library. Tap a cell to swap a photo, and pinch or drag to frame it.
- Style it. Change the background to a colour, gradient or pattern, adjust spacing and borders, and add text or stickers.
- Apply a filter so all the photos share the same look.
- Export in high quality, then share it to Instagram, WhatsApp or Messages, or save it to Photos.
Tip: projects are saved, so you can come back later and swap a photo or fix a caption without starting over.
Method 2: Use a free online collage maker
If you just need a quick grid and don't want to install anything, use the free online collage maker on this site. It works in Safari on iPhone:
- Open the collage maker and tap Add photos.
- Choose a layout (2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 9 photos) and a size such as 1:1 for a post or 9:16 for a story.
- Drag photos to reposition them, and adjust spacing, corners and the background colour.
- Tap Download collage. The JPG goes to your Downloads, and from there you can save it to Photos.
Your photos stay on your phone. Nothing is uploaded.
Method 3: The Shortcuts app (no extra app)
iPhone's built-in Shortcuts app has a Combine Images action that can put photos side by side, stacked or in a grid. Create a new shortcut, add Select Photos (allow multiple), then Combine Images, then Save to Photo Album. It's free, but there's no styling: no backgrounds, rounded corners, text or templates.
Tips for a collage that looks good
- Pick one hero photo. Layouts with one big photo and two or three small ones are easier on the eye than many photos of the same size.
- Mix close-ups and wide shots. A face, a detail and a landscape tell a better story than three similar group photos.
- Keep the colours consistent. Use one filter for all photos, or choose photos with similar tones.
- Leave some breathing room. A little spacing and a soft background colour make the collage look designed rather than crammed.
- Size it for where it's going. Use 4:5 for Instagram feed posts, 9:16 for stories and the print size if you'll frame it. See our collage size guide.
Which method should you use?
For a quick side-by-side or 2×2 grid, the online maker or Shortcuts is enough. For anything you want to look special, such as a birthday tribute, a travel recap or an Instagram post with captions, a collage app like FotoCollage gives you templates, backgrounds, text and stickers that make the difference.
